Chicago Day at the World's Columbian Exposition

Chicago Day was designed as a city wide celebration of the 22nd anniversary of the fire that leveled most of the city. It gave the people of Chicago an opportunity to celebrate the tremendous courage and heart it took to rebuild, and to thank all those who helped. They wanted to break the record for paid attendance for one day at any World's Fair, held by the Paris Exposition of 1889 at 397,000. On this historic day, 761,942 people crammed into the Fair, the largest crowd ever paying to celebrate a single event in modern times.

Extensive planning was needed for this special day. Train fares to Chicago were reduced. Major companies bought thousands of complimentary tickets for their employees. Businesses were closed so workers could take their families. Officials even had known pickpockets arrested to boost public confidence. The tremendous crowds, fabulous parades, special ceremonies and breathtaking fireworks all helped make Chicago Day the greatest day of The Columbian Exposition, and one of the proudest for the city of Chicago.

Imagine being part of a crowd of 750,000! It was often referred to as "a black sea of humanity" since the popular fashion colors for the Fall of 1893 consisted of black, black and black!
